BE WELL… GET WELL… STAY WELL
There is a lot of angst and concern right now about health issues. However, if you understand that it is your body’s defence system that will PROTECT you and KEEP you well, you can evaluate what your level of health is right now and make any necessary changes.
The broader picture
Let’s start with the broader protection called the immune system.
Here are four basic scientific functions of your body’s defence system that you need to know and consider if you are concerned.
Your body is designed to:
- Protect you
- Heal/repair itself
- Detoxify itself
- Rebalance itself
This is all part of your immune system.
Here are two basic scientific health information links to get a general overview of your own body’s protection;
- This is a link to Wikibooks and the immune system and this is a link to Google for results for a healthy immune system
“The immune system is a complex system that is responsible for protecting us against infections and foreign substances. There are three lines of defense:
- The First line of defence is to keep invaders out (through skin, mucus membranes, etc),
- The Second line of defence consists of non-specific ways to defend against pathogens that have broken through the first line of defense (such as with inflammatory response and fever).
- The Third line of defence is mounted against specific pathogens that are causing disease (B cells produce antibodies against bacteria or viruses in the extracellular fluid, while T cells kill cells that have become infected). The immune system is closely tied to the lymphatic system, with B and T lymphocytes being found primarily within lymph nodes. Tonsils and the thymus gland are also considered lymph organs and are involved in immunity. We often don’t realize how effective the immune system is until it fails or malfunctions, such as when the lymphocytes are attacked by HIV in an AIDS patient.”
Ultimately, it’s always up to you to decide what you put into or onto your body. It’s all a matter of looking at what you are doing right now: to keep doing the right things currently or to make a few adjustments to bring your immune system back up to a healthy level. It all starts with your own health.
This is certainly not complicated, and you are perfectly capable of thinking this through. I am sure you have heard the phrase “You are what you eat”. And that is true at all times, including right now. As this is your body and you want to manage it safely, you need to take on this responsibility and not give it to anyone else.
Your goal should be to keep this very important (defence) system as healthy as possible. That way everything is healthy. And you can just carry on and enjoy your life. But that doesn’t mean you should seek out unhealthy situations and feel you are safe. Be grateful you are healthy and carry on being healthy.
Taking a closer look
One you already know and practice is proper handwashing.
The only way your body can be healthy is via nutrients, water, and air. This is how you stay alive.
Nutrients: provide the six nutrients it needs to thrive:
- Fats
- Proteins
- Carbohydrates
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Water
How do you get these into your body? By eating the foods: directly by eating them or indirectly by supplementation. And right now, don’t get stuck on organic vs. whole foods and such discussions. Just eat wholesome foods to keep your body healthy.
One of the easiest and most uncomplicated things to help yourself is to eat a healthy diet, to feed your body the nutrients it needs to thrive.
6 Essential Nutrients and Why Your Body Needs Them
- Healthline.com; 6 Essential Nutrients and Why Your Body Needs Them
Water as in fluids:
Drink tap water that comes from a tested source. Right now, don’t get caught up in the hype about what kind of water to drink. Drink some. Coffees teas, milk, juices, and obviously fruits and vegetables are fine: they all contain water, and some, contain antioxidants. If you have some time, educate yourself on the health benefits of antioxidants.
A word about Air
Air is vital to your overall health. Right now, if you need to wear facial protection, be creative.. make your own from a hankie or a scarf. But again, if you are healthy with a strong immune system, breathing in the air you are exposed to will be fine. But again, use your common sense. It’s the people who have a compromised immune system (on immunosuppressant drugs) that need extra precautions.
My point here is to help you relax and not cling to the fears you are hearing. Please use your common sense. You have it.
What if you suspect that your body’s defence system isn‘t as healthy as you want it to be?
First make sure you are eating these six classes of nutrients in your daily meals. You can eat them whatever way you want, but get them into your body. Once they are in your body, your body knows what to do with them, where to distribute them.
Drink lots of fluids. Fluids help your body (kidneys, skin, liver, and bowel) get rid of toxins. There is an exchange process going on in your body at all times.
Something different
Let’s also look at something a little different. Could it be that you are also putting things into your body that may not be as “helpful” to your immune system as you think?
Go back to the four basic body functions (protect, heal, detoxify, rebalance). Ask yourself if each item you put into or onto your body supports these needs. I am frequently telling people to make two lists:
- What they put INTO their body and
- What they put ONTO their body (everything from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet.).
That way you are not forgetting any things. What you put ONTO your body gets absorbed just as quickly as anything eaten. I assume you are doing everything to enhance the quality of your life. (And that is your job.)
The question is “does this item really keep you healthy, scientifically”? Only you can answer that question for yourself honestly.
Lastly…
GET WELL
If you are at a stage where you feel you are NOT well and healthy, then you should consider looking for what is missing…
So…
Are you supplying all the nutrients it needs? If not, find a way to get them into your body. You may need to eat differently or “supplement” (top up) what you eat well now. (If you are interested in learning about my choice of supplements, let me know.)
Are you drinking lots of fluids? Tea, milk, coffee, juices all contain water. Just plain water is a fluid. Your body needs fluids in order to keep going. You don’t need to know what your body does with fluids: just provide it in some form.
Have you ever really thought about breathing? Your body knows when to breathe. You don’t need to help it, but you do need to provide clean air. So you may need to be cautious as to where you visit.
Simple, right?
Please understand that you do NOT have to get any medical advice, any special permission, or training to do any of these things. This is a “refresher” of information you learned in school.
This is pure common sense.
This is your body: protect it. I know you instinctively recognize what you should be providing.
