My husband has Meniere’s disease and he says, “Some days, life just wasn’t worth living!”
If you have Meniere’s disease, or if you know anyone who has this horrible disease I bet they also feel like that. David still has his disease, but he no longer has the symptoms of Meniere’s Disease that made his life so unbearable at times.
As a practicing nurse, I’ve seen people with Meniere’s Disease spending many years looking for relief from this unpredictable and unavoidable torment. And it’s even worse to watch this happen to someone close to you. This also involves another important group. Meniere’s Disease isn’t just a disease for the patient. This disease affects the whole family. So when my husband started to get relief, so did we. We feel LIFE is pretty wonderful!
This site was created from two perspectives: from the Menieres disease sufferer’s point of view and then the family’s.
You will find basic information on the different symptoms of Meniere’s Disease. Each category provides brief overviews of different subjects for easy understanding.
It is also not our intent to recreate any medical documents. In our research we came across many excellent in-depth articles on meniere’s disease, full of medical jargon. Some of these sites provided information that I, as a nurse, would have to spend a few minutes “deciphering”.
Sometimes it is not easy to get a clear understanding of what is happening in our body and why. As a clinical instructor, it is my job to clarify such these ideas, treatments, and procedures. Many times if someone has a better understanding of why their body is behaving a certain way, they can accept it or find a different way to cope.
We regularly receive letters from people who are looking for help and support. People don’t usually search the Internet for;
- Vertigo and Dizziness
- Sudden Falls or Drop Attacks
- Loss of Hearing
- Hearing Fluctuation
without a very good reason. Then they want this information quickly, without complicated language…without sentences that must be read several times in order to be understood. Or by using words which require a dictionary.
We also thought that the symptoms of Menieres Disease should be “demystified”
It’s a fairly common condition, and people should know about it. (A Meniere’s attack in public causes quite a scene.) Several million people in North America suffer from it. That means that many, many families are affected by this problem. Our life is pretty representative of everyone else’ with this condition. We felt our experiences are there to provide additional insight.
When you read each section of the website you should be able to develop your own ideas on how to cope and overcome these obstacles: to figure out what would work in your own life.
As human beings, we have a lot of ability. Often our brains just need to be exposed to a concept. Then our creative juices take over and we come up with very workable methods.
We want to leave you with one thought. New research is focusing on the idea that the “Meniere’s” problems might be caused by our auto-immune system. If that’s the case, there is a lot of hope. Then life won’t have to be this uncomfortable for someone with Meniere’s Disease.
